What does "hand-knotted leather" mean?
Hand-knotted leather is woven strand by strand over a structured base — not stitched, not glued, not machine-pressed. The technique gives the shoe its texture, lightness, and a quiet sense of craft that machine production cannot replicate. Black Tulip's Tessa range is hand-knotted across all silhouettes.
How long does a single pair take to make?
A Tessa Ballerina takes approximately 19 hours of weaving per pair. A Tessa Sandal takes approximately 7. Because the weave is fully manual, the pace of production is set by craft, not by calendar.
How is hand-knotted leather different from braided or woven straps?
Braided leather is plaited from three or more pre-cut strips. Woven straps usually combine pre-cut leather panels. Hand-knotted leather starts from individual strands that pass over and under one another in a structured pattern over a base — closer in technique to a textile loom than a braid.
Where are Black Tulip woven shoes made?
Designed in London and crafted by India artisans drawing on three generations of shoemaking heritage. Each pair is completed by hand in small batches.
Will the weave loosen or fall apart with wear?
No - the woven upper is secured at every contact point to a structured leather base. The weave is decorative on the surface but anchored underneath. Treated with the care guidance below, a Tessa pair is designed to last for years.
How do I care for hand-knotted leather shoes?
Apply a neutral leather conditioner lightly to the woven sections every 4–6 weeks. Wipe with a soft dry cloth between wears. Avoid prolonged exposure to rain or wet surfaces. Store in the dust bag away from direct sunlight. Never soak, never machine wash, never apply direct heat.
Is the leather sustainable?
Yes. All Black Tulip leather is 100% LWG-certified (Leather Working Group) — sourced from tanneries audited for environmental responsibility, water stewardship, and traceability. Unsold stock goes to Smart Works, a UK charity that supports women preparing for job interviews.
Can I pre-order if a colourway is out of stock?
Yes. Each batch is hand-woven in small numbers, so colourways sell through. Sign up to a colourway's back-in-stock notification on its product page and we'll email you when the next batch is ready.
