One rule carries the table: the hem either covers the boot or sits clearly above it, never in between. If it cannot pass cleanly over the shaft, raise the hem rather than the jeans.

How to Wear Ankle Boots With Jeans: The Two Measurements to Take First
- Measure your jean's leg opening. Lay the jeans flat, smooth the leg, and measure across the hem from edge to edge. That is half the circumference. Double it: a 15cm flat opening is a 30cm hem.
- Measure the boot shaft. Around the top of the shaft, at its widest point. If you are buying rather than checking a pair you own, measure the closest boot in your wardrobe and read the product photography against that number.
- Compare the two. The hem needs roughly 4cm more than the shaft to pass over it and hang straight. Larger — wear it long. The same or smaller — it sits above the boot, and you should not force it over. Without that 4cm the denim grips, rides up, and sits crooked by the end of the street.

Straight leg is the hardest cut and the most common: the opening looks wide enough to pass over the boot and rarely is, so the hem is caught halfway. It should meet the top of the boot or sit clearly above it, never mid-shaft. The hem falls over the boot and the shaft disappears, so shaft width and height are irrelevant. The toe does the entire job: slim and tapered stays clean under the drape, while a round or square toe pushes out from under the fold and shortens the leg. Finish the hem low, or the boot looks marooned.

The opposite discipline. The hem sits above the shaft with deliberate clearance, so the shaft has to be worth showing: narrow, clean, no bulk at the top. A single 3–4cm turn just above the boot top. No bunching, no uneven gap, and the narrowest visible point of the leg sits above the boot rather than at it.
2. Over the Shaft — Good, With a Caveat
Works when the shaft is close-fitting and the denim has stretch: a 12–14cm opening passes over a slim shaft. A rigid, non-stretch skinny will not — it grips and rides up.
3. Tucked In — Only if the Shaft Has the Room
A narrow ankle boot shaft rarely does.

Denim After 50
The measurements do not change with age; the wash and the heel tend to. A dark wash with a kitten heel holds the line unbroken.
What Goes Wrong: Three Failures and the Fix
1. The Stumpy Silhouette
A wide hem meeting a wide shaft draws a horizontal line at the narrowest part of the leg, and that line stops the leg short. Narrow one of the two — it has nothing to do with your height.
2. Bunching
The opening is wider than the shaft but not wide enough to drape past it, so the denim folds. Turn it up, or go wider.
3. The Heel-Tab Catch
The hem snags at the back with every stride, then hangs crooked, because it sits too close to the top of the shaft. Raise it clear, or drop it past.
